Ideal Weight Calculator
Target weight range using multiple scientific formulas
About the Ideal Weight Calculator
Ideal body weight is an estimate of a healthy target weight based on height and gender, calculated using multiple validated medical formulas. Rather than relying on a single number, this calculator shows results from four scientific methods — Hamwi, Devine, Robinson, and Miller — along with the healthy BMI weight range, so you can see the full picture. Frame size adjustments account for individual differences in bone structure.
How to Use
- Select your gender and enter your height (cm or inches)
- Choose your frame size — small, medium, or large
- Optionally enter your current weight to see how it compares to the ideal range
- Click Calculate to view ideal weight estimates from all four formulas and the BMI range
Formula Used
Women: 45.4 + 2.27/cm over 152
Devine: Men 50 + 2.3/inch over 5ft
Women: 45.5 + 2.3/inch over 5ft
BMI Range: Weight = BMI × H(m)²
Healthy BMI = 18.5 – 24.9
All results in kg. Frame size applies a ±10% adjustment to the BMI-based range to account for body structure variation.
Understanding Your Results
Frequently Asked Questions
What is the ideal weight for my height?
There's no single "ideal" — only a healthy range. The most-cited shortcut: height in cm − 100 (men) or − 110 (women) gives a reasonable target. The healthy BMI range (18.5–24.9) gives a band of roughly ±10 kg for a typical adult height.
Why do different formulas (Devine, Robinson, Miller, Hamwi) give different results?
They were developed for different purposes — drug dosing, insurance tables, military fitness — using different reference populations. Differences of 2–5 kg between formulas are normal. Use the average across formulas as a guide.
Is "ideal weight" the same as "healthy weight"?
Not quite. Ideal-weight formulas give one number; healthy weight is a range. Many doctors prefer healthy-weight ranges based on BMI 18.5–24.9 because individual variation in build and muscle mass matters.
Should I focus on weight or body composition?
Body composition (fat % vs muscle %) is a better health marker than weight alone. A muscular person may exceed their "ideal weight" while being metabolically healthier than a lighter, sedentary one. Use weight + body fat + waist measurement together.
